John Fahey—“On Doing an Evil Deed Blues”

Blind Joe Death (Takoma 1959).

I’ve been enjoying lot’s of old blues vax this winter and spring. Moving to a new hood with a good record store just a couple of hundred meters down the road where I’ve already become a regular. The other week I picked up an old Memphis Minnie there and last week a Coley Jones and Dallas String Band from the 30’s (well, not an original i.e. but a later pressing).

John Fahey is an old fave too, especially his early work from the late 50s, such as this late night favourite!

Mesmerizing vocal performance brought to my attention by Ian Nagoski, the curator of several recommendable comp’s of o-o-old school goodies. In the pipeline from Nagoski’s Canary label, in cooperation with my favorite re-issue label Mississippi, is a new comp of rembetika as well as a comp of vintage Armenian music (unfortunately not including this beauty)

mangkunegaran:

One of several takes of “Groung” (“Crane”) released as Col E3503 and recorded by Zabella Panosian ca. April 1917. (Other takes are slightly lower in key and do not have the bird sounds.) Panosian was about 22 years old at the time and was the mother of a 6-year-old. She had lived in Boston for a period and later lived on 183rd St. in New York. Her total discography was ten songs recorded in a period of about 10 months.

Song: La Llorona

Artist: Los Dementes

Album: Mi Deuda De Amor

This song is classic, this song but I really mean the original version.

I fell in love with this slow and beautiful tune tonight. A “Charanga”, I was told? An early Nuyorican Salsa (60s or 70s?) with haunting, reverbting plucks of cuatro (or is it perhaps violin?) and achingly powerful vocals by Teo Hernandez, originally released on Fania.

I just found a best of-compilation over at Sun of Latin Music with a DL-link that is still active (and on it’s way down to me now ;)

Edward Gorey, master of the mischievously macabre, shared a decades-long friendship and correspondence with Peter Neumeyer, a writer and professor whose childrens’ books he illustrated. Luckily for us they communicated via snail mail.
